At Bernaerts Auctioneers, summer has now begun, weather permitting or not. The Timed Online auction from 5 to 19 July is full of landscapes, summer colours and decorative African art.

Lot 118. Freek van den Berg (1918-2000), 'Stilleven met tulpen', 1967. Est.: €650-800

20th century paintings
The summer approach of this auction asserts itself in this first series with several landscapes by Alfred Bastien, Jos Mous, Tony Van Os, Willem Paerels, Frederic De Smet and others. Portraits of Charles Hermans, Floris Jespers, Vic Dolphyn and Jean Laudy will also be featured in this session, alongside a typical church interior by Frans Ros and a contrasting still life by Rik Slabbinck.

Postwar paintings
From an important Dutch-Belgian collection, a large series of works by Freek van den Berg (1918-2000) will come under the hammer. This Dutch follower of Fauvism specialises in brushing landscapes and expressive female portraits, all with a refreshing colour palette.

This same auction also features modern portraits, by artists such as Paule Nolens, Jef Wauters, Bernard Charoy, or also a very expressive Daniel You. The landscapes are provided by Paul Permeke and Achille Van Sassenbrouck, among others.

Lot 300. Mwenze Kibwanga (1924-1999), the hairdo, 1954. Est.: €800-1000

Decorative African objects
Congolese Mwenze Kibwanga is represented by three paintings in the third auction series. His style is also called ‘zébrure’, referring to the thick brushstrokes he uses to shape his representations. They reflect the twists and turns of his father’s loom and at the same time, this technique makes everything flow into each other, as the background is painted in the same way.

Besides these paintings, more than 60 objects, fetishes, masks and ceremonial weapons, mostly from the D.R.C., but also Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania and Gabon, are also on offer.

Lot 351. Beaded crown for tribal chief. Yoruba, Nigeria. Est.: €200-300

Works on Paper
Starting with some old tomes from the 17th century, we pretty soon end up in the 20th century. As such, lithographs by James Ensor are included in this auction, alongside graphic work by Jef van Tuerenhout, Marcel Mariën, Robert Rauschenberg and Joseph Beuys, among others. Original works are by Jan Burssens, Alfred Ost, Mane-Katz, Alice Frey, Maurits Van Saene, Lionel Vinche and Victor Ramirez, to name just a handful. Finally, we quote a futuristic drawing by Paul Joostens and a series of study drawings by Ronald De Winter.

Lot 1021. Marcel Mariën (1920-1993). 'Rubis de l 'espérance', 1972. Est.: €200-300

Frequently asked questions

bidding
On Timed Online auctions, all lots are offered exclusively online, on our website and app, with a fixed end date at which bidding closes. From the moment this auction comes online, a ‘Timed Online‘ button will appear on our site in the top right corner for you to click.
After registering for the relevant auction, you can place your bid by clicking on the indicated next amount or you can set a maximum bid. In the latter case, the system will automatically bid for you against any other contenders up to the amount of your maximum bid, according to the fixed bid steps. If you are outbid, you will be notified via email and on the app. You can then bid higher if you wish. Your maximum bid is not visible to other bidders.
If you receive a counter bid, or if a higher maximum bid has already been submitted by another bidder, the text ‘OVERBID’ will appear next to the lot in question.

If several bidders have entered the same maximum bid, the one who first set his or her automatic bid will outbid the others.
When the lot is about to close and another bid comes in, bidders will be given 10 minutes to respond each time.
