Three sessions of Works on Paper for the October auction, accounting for just under 700 lots.
Works on Paper I: from the library of Boris Rousseeuw (lot 1000-1281)
On Thursday 10 October, we will put Boris Rousseeuw’s exceptional collection up for auction. The founder of ‘Carbolineum Pers’ amassed an exceptional collection of De Praetere editions and was also the largest Tom Lanoye collector. In a varied afternoon session, this unique collection, with numerous unique and almost unfindable editions, will be presented to the general public.
Works on Paper II: valuable books, catalogues, literature and modern prints and drawings (lot 1500-1676)
On Friday, 11 October at 10am, we will present a small but diverse collection of old and valuable books, alongside fine literary and art editions, such as Roland Jooris Raoul de Keyser’s ‘ Een verpakte gedachte’, with some rare ephemera surrounding it. This session will also feature a unique corrected proof of Elschot’s novella ‘Het Tankschip’, alongside the manuscript and typescript of Hugo Claus’ play “Gilles!”. James Ensor is also well covered with no less than 20 items including an extremely rare coloured-in version of his famous etching ‘La Cathédrale’ and the magnificent portfolio ‘Scènes de la vie du Christ’. The session ends with two fine watercolours by Léon Spilliaert and a hushed landscape, ‘Notation paysage’, by Rik Wouters, from the legendary Galerie Georges Giroux.

Works on Paper III: postwar prints, drawings and editions (2000-2226)
The afternoon session at 2pm is entirely reserved for post-war drawing, prints and editions. We bring you a sheet with some original preliminary studies by Lucio Fontana, a monumental blue ballpoint drawing by Jan Fabre, from the former collection of the artist Johan Van Gheluwe comes a small, but exceptional, collection of early graphic work by Raoul de Keyser, two editions by the German grandmaster Gerhard Richter, a beautiful portfolio by Bernd Hilla Becher. There are also some rare editions by Antoni Tàpies, mostly published by Maeght, two breathtaking portfolios by Roger Raveel, a fine set of editions and an original triptych by Jan Vercruysse. But the main focus will be on Keith Haring’s prints. Besides the remarkable lithograph he made for the Casino in Knokke (1987), we also offer a complete, quasi-pristine set of his ‘Pop Shop III’ portfolio, acquired by the current owner himself in New York at the Pop Shop in 1989.
